A logic flaw in the JFrog Artifactory token authentication handler, tracked as CVE-2026-42016, allows authenticated attackers to execute privilege escalation attacks across artifact repositories. The vulnerability stems from an improper authorization check (CWE-863) where the application confirms a token’s signature and issuer, but neglects to validate the actual scope granted to that token before processing requests.
Token Signature vs. Scope Validation
In modern enterprise artifact management, access tokens are heavily relied upon to enforce fine-grained permissions—restricting build systems to read-only access on specific repositories or limiting developer access to individual projects.
When an API request is received, Artifactory validates the incoming JSON Web Token (JWT) or scoped access token. In vulnerable instances, the access control logic verifies that the token was signed by a trusted authority and remains unexpired, but fails to evaluate whether the token’s defined scope attribute grants permission for the targeted action.
Because the authorization check halts after signature verification, any user or service account with a valid, low-privilege token can submit requests to higher-privilege API endpoints. This allows an attacker to bypass intended access controls entirely, resulting in high confidentiality and integrity impacts without altering service availability (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N).
Risk Context and Pipeline Exposure
CVE-2026-42016 carries a CVSS score of 8.1, primarily driven by the low attack complexity and lack of required user interaction. While current EPSS estimates place the immediate 30-day exploitation probability at a modest 0.27% (18.4th percentile), this number reflects public wild exploitation rather than the true exposure inside corporate build pipelines.
Artifactory sits at the center of modern software supply chains. Scoped tokens are routinely distributed to CI/CD runners, developer workstations, and third-party integration tools. In an enterprise environment, an attacker who steals a low-tier deployment token or breaches a single developer environment can use this vulnerability to perform unauthorized reads of sensitive proprietary packages or overwrite release binaries in production repositories.
Patching and Remediation
Organizations running self-hosted JFrog Artifactory must update all instances running versions prior to 7.133.11 to the latest release to restore proper token scope enforcement.
For federal agencies and enterprise environments bound by CISA BOD 26-04 guidance, remediation or enforcement of approved vendor mitigations must be completed by September 25, 2026. Organizations should audit existing access tokens across CI/CD pipelines and ensure self-hosted instances exposed to non-administrative internal networks are prioritized for updating.
